I also really appreciated how high the spirits of these men were able to be maintained through deliberate action on Shackleton’s part and also man’s ability to adapt to the conditions given to us. It was definitely a grind watching the two steps forward, one step back progress unfold, but well worth the anxiety. Alfred Lansing’s scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance’s fateful trip. The grit and endurance they had to have to live on ice and ocean for TWO years with nothing but seal blubber and limited rations really makes you appreciate the simple comforts in life. The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton’s survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, defined heroism. The book is non fiction but reads like a novel just because of how ludicrous it seems that this band of men were able to escape by the skin of their teeth. The tale of how this party of 27 men got stuck in the Wendell Sea and made it out alive with basically everything that could go against them going against them, is such a crazy story that really made me appreciate the comfort of my couch and warm blanket I got to read this book from. Ernest Shackleton's remarkable story is a terrifying adventure with the happiest of endings - another brilliant narrative non-fiction Antarctic adventure featuring an explorer who was a true polar hero Adrift on the Antarctic pack ice with no means of escape and no hope of rescue, Ernest Shackleton and his men are surely doomed.
